Gone To Sleep

My family, on father’s side to be more specific is “fond of sleeping”. Actually, it is our major hobby and one of our “ambitions in life”(lol). I don’t know why is that so.
I am a nocturnal person and love to stay up late. And if I have nothing to do, I prefer going to bed and eventually sleep instead of going out and party or visit someone or other activities.
Anyway, here’s another quick fact related to sleeping.

A snail can sleep for three years. Yes, this is true, I just don’t know who studied and proved it and for what purpose (hehehe). Well, maybe in my past life, I was once a snail, or related to snail…(lol)

Die, Cockroach! Die!

I have mentioned in my other blog that I really dread cockroaches as they are one of the most “dirtiest”, if not the most, insect the whole wide world… What I don’t understand is that; what is their purpose in life? Or in human life, that is? Grrr…. Why don’t they just die and be gone forever?! Anyway, here are some quick facts about them that makes me hate them further.

A cockroach will live nine days without its head and take note, they will only be dead because of starvation.

If earth will be bombarded by large doses of radiation that will cause death to all living things (actually, not all), the only living thing will remain is the cockroach! See how stubborn they are?

If there is any scientist or the like who is reading this now, can you please research on how these cockroaches can replace lead as the main material for radiation shielding? In this way, they will be of use to us (I’m dead serious here)

Dusts Particles Are Primarily Made Of…

I will be taking my Christmas vacation in a short while but before I leave, my husband and I have been cleaning the house (rented house, actually) so that everything will be kept safe while we’re away. The funny thing is that, the next day, we still noticed dusts everywhere. Now here’s a quick fact about dust particles.

Most dust particles are made from dead skin. It’s because our millions or even billions of our cells regenerate every now and then. Sometimes, we use loofah to take away these dead skin cells but a lot of times, we don’t need one because they just naturally fall off (without our knowing) and circulates around us (with the air).

Former President Joseph Estrada was known for his fear of the number 13. He is the only person I know that has an irrational fear of this number. What I find interesting about this is that, he was the 13th president of the Philippines. And many are aware of the tragedy that he went through during his political reign. Was being the 13th President a sign of his career downfall? Or that was just a plain coincidence? Hmmm….

Here in the Philippines, the most popular social network is Friendster. I think I don’t have to elaborate further about this as I’m pretty sure that you’re one of us (Friendster user), too, right? Anyway, in the US, (not necessarily US) or in other countries, most of the people there are using Facebook aside from MySpace to get in touch with their families and friends, as well as, meet other people online.

The Origin of the Word Testify

We have been using the word “testify” since time immemorial. According to Encarta Encyclopedia, testify means to declare something that can be taken as evidence under oath in a court of law or to make factual statement based on experience. But do you know where this word originated? I know you’ll be amazed if you still haven’t.

The word "testis", in human anatomy, refers to a part of the reproductive organ of the male or sometimes referred to as the “testicles”. On the other hand, this also came from the Latin word that means “to bear witness”.

In ancient Rome, only men could bear witness or testify in a public forum – because only men have testes (plural of testis). What’s a little bit preposterous about it is that, in order to show importance to their testimony, they would hold their testicles as they spoke, and an oath was declared while holding another's testicles. Santa Claus was originally St. Nicholas, who was born in the village of Patara. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while he was still young. Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Widely celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas' feast day, December 6th, kept alive the stories of his goodness and generosity. In Germany and Poland, boys dressed as bishops begged alms for the poor—and sometimes for themselves! In the Netherlands and Belgium, St. Nicholas arrived on a steamship from Spain to ride a white horse on his gift-giving rounds.

December 6th is still the main day for gift giving and merrymaking in much of Europe. For example, in the Netherlands St. Nicholas is celebrated on the 5th, the eve of the day, by sharing candies (thrown in the door), chocolate initial letters, small gifts, and riddles. Dutch children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for the saint's horse, hoping St. Nicholas will exchange them for small gifts. Since I’m in a medical-related field, I’m into medical facts and other science-related things. I’m somewhat fascinated with these things as it would be nice to know that you know something occurred or existed before anybody else. Sanju Bhagat, 30 years old from India, was rushed to hospital as his belly keeps getting bigger and bigger each day. After several tests, his doctor found out that Bhagat has a medical condition called fetus in fetu. This very peculiar medical condition is called as such because one of the twins gets trapped inside of the other, from then on he dwells inside and feeds himself by leaching on his twin’s blood supply, just like a parasite.

A successful surgical operation was done to Bhagat to remove the “parasite inside his belly. Rare and interesting, indeed….

Why men are accustomed to giving chocolates to women, especially during courting stage? It's because chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), a natural substance that is reputed to stimulate the same reaction in the body as falling in love.

• A recent study indicates that when men crave for food, they tend to crave for fatty and salty foods but when women crave for food, they tend to desire chocolate.

I've Finally Decided

I have now decided that this new blog of mine will all be about trivias and other odd but true facts. Personally, I am very much interested on these areas because it feels good (for me, I guess) to know things that is seldom known to people.
I don’t intend for this blog to be another one full of paid posts. Maybe I can earn through adsense and some ads if I get lucky. (lol)

I just hope that people will also find these topics (niche) interesting and useful so that we will both learn and be aware of things and information that might come in handy.
